wedding basket; sintong

‘Wedding’ basket, with ‘mata punai’ (pigeon’s eye) design in the narrow borders top and bottom. The basket is formed of two layers of basketry. On the outer layer the square panel of design on each side is typical of a wedding basket; the form is that of a basket used to carry rice seed for planting. The lack of loops at the top shows that it was never used for this purpose. The flat wooden rim is attached with level stitching.

this type of basket is said to have been used for carrying dowry during a wedding ceremony
