Tea (Chá, Chai, Tea) – Mandarin Tour
Tea is a part of our daily lives, but do we know the history of tea?
The popularity and spread of tea is connected to imperialism and colonial violence. From the development of colonial plantations to the modern tea we enjoy in Britain, the inequality and exploitation issues behind it still exist and should be discussed more. Of course, tea has also inspired artistic expression, cultural customs and identities in different societies.
Our tour-lead Qiuyan Chen will explore the history of tea and relevance of tea today, sharing voices and perspectives from people all over the world within the exhibition and inviting you to share your own.
Qiuyan Chen, who grew up in China, is a LGBTQ+ community organizer and socially engaged artist. She has initiated decolonizing queer tours in various locations in London and looks forward to sharing the tea exhibition with you by integrating her diaspora and gender perspectives.
