On Sunday 3 August the Horniman's Animal Walk welcomed a very special new arrival as Peep, our black Huacaya alpaca, gave birth to a fawn female cria weighing 6.7kg. Since then, she has been entertaining visitors to the Animal Walk as she finds her feet and frolics in the paddock with her mum and 'Aunty' Ness.
Still needing a name for the new arrival, two weeks ago we launched a competition for our social media followers and readers of the South London Press to vote for their favourite from a shortlist of six.
We're now thrilled to announce that our baby alpaca's official name will be Horniman Poppy, a name inspired by the date of her birth.
We’re delighted that so many people took part in naming our baby Alpaca. The name Poppy seems particularly appropriate, given that she was born on the eve of the Centenary of World War One.

One lucky voter will also be announced as the winner of a prize draw, receiving a year's Horniman membership as a thankyou for voting in the competition.
You can visit Poppy and her mother Peep in the Animal Walk, which is open seven days a week between 12.30-4.00pm. Entry to the Animal Walk is free.
