Exhibitions and displays
Created in collaboration with Horniman Youth, Muf Architecture and Peckham Platform, My Model City looks at the ideas and dreams that will shape our cities to come in the reimagined streets of Peckham. Visit the exhibition in The Studio until Sunday 1 September.
The photographic series Turn it Up: On Paradoxes from Jide Odukoya highlights a paradox of opulence, with underlying economic poverty. His works highlights the importance of extravagant celebration to Nigerian cultural identity because the wealth supporting it is fragile. View the spirited exhibition in the Balcony Gallery now.
The dramatic As I Live and Breathe in the Natural History Gallery and Gallery Square is open now. The thought-provoking series of works created by Award-winning, internationally exhibited visual artist Claire Morgan draw upon the theme of waste at the impact on their environment.
Say hello to the Green Turtle taxidermy on loan from the Natural History Museum, and learn about what we can all do to help conserve sea turtles in the Natural History Gallery.
Brick Wonders features 50 wondrous marvels from across the world and our history, from the Great Barrier Reef to iconic landmarks such as Old London Bridge and an Ancient Egyptian pyramid. Visitors can build their own awesome creations in our two interactive play areas, take on the tower-building challenge and add to our graffiti wall. Visit the exhibition off Gallery Square.
Families who are unable to visit when the Horniman is busy, including children with autism spectrum conditions or neurodiverse families can join us for a special early morning viewing on Thursday 15 August.
Always Part of the Story depicts hidden and visible aspects of disability. The display from The Access Advisory Group shows that the world can be experienced and understood in many ways. The display is on until June 2020 in World Gallery.
Join us for Wonderful Wednesdays in the summer holidays. Drop-in for free family activities, storytelling and craft with our community partners.
Come along to Family Art Fun on Tuesdays for art and craft activities inspired by our Museum objects, living collections and Gardens. Tickets for this event can now be purchased in advance.
Join us every Thursday of the summer holidays to create your very own Nature Notebook, which you can use to explore our Gardens.
Drop into the Hand on Base for our Summer Holidays edition of Horniman Explorers. Join in fun challenges to explore and touch amazing objects from our collections.
Happening in August
Chill out to the sounds of South London as the sun goes down. South London Music Sessions in partnership with The Midi Music Company will feature some of the best young live talents London has to offer. Artists include Oggie and Having Technical Difficulties. Come along to our final sessions on Thursdays 1 and 8 August.
Discover what insects, animals and plants thrive on the Horniman Nature Trail this summer. Come along to our Summer Welly Walk on the Nature Trail on Saturday 3 August.
Young people will take part in a week of free music workshops and achieve a Bronze Arts Award.Sculpting Sound: Bronze Arts Award, with Goldsmiths takes place Monday 5 - Friday 9 August 2019.

Search for bats in our Gardens using real bat detectors and hand some taxidermy bats in our Handling Collection in Bat Walk for families on Friday 30 August.
Hear it Live! has now gone weekly. See performances every Thursday that feature performances and talks based 17th and 18th century instruments including three from the Finchcocks Collection.
Grab a golf club and get the Plonk Crazy Golf course a go, in their 9-hole putting course. The course is open daily over summer.
If you are a new visitor to the Horniman or would like a refresh to our collections then come along to one of our Welcome to the Horniman Tours. Tours with our fantastic Visitor Hosts take place every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Hands on Base will be open every weekend for you to explore our Handling collection.
The Gardens open at 7.15am from Monday to Saturday, and from 8am on Sundays. The Gardens close at 8.50 pm until Sunday 11 August. From Monday 12 August to Sunday 25 August the Gardens will close at 8.20pm and from 7.50pm on Monday 26 August.
