Help Mark Fairnington reveal the Horniman’s hidden world

Help us reveal the hidden world of the Horniman through a new exhibition by artist Mark Fairnington - and get great rewards

We're asking art lovers and museum-goers to help mount a new exhibition of stunning paintings, which reveal the hidden objects in our museum's stores.

We've teamed up with the Art Fund for a fundraising campaign, which launchs today (2 March 2015). We need to raise £9,500 in just eight weeks through Art Happens, the Art Fund’s crowdfunding platform.

The money raised will fund Collected and Possessed, an exhibition of paintings of unseen specimens and artefacts by artist Mark Fairnington, shown alongside the objects and creatures that inspired them.

But if the total is not reached, we will receive nothing and the exhibition cannot take place.

Jo Hatton, Keeper of Natural History here at the Horniman, says, "Like many museums and galleries, we only have space to display a fraction of our collection. Mark's paintings are not only beautiful in their own right, they also allow visitors to experience more of our stored specimens, in a unique way.
Collected and Possessed will bring to light the hidden world of the Horniman's stored collections, and invite visitors to see what it is like to open a box, or undo a wrapping, to discover the object within."

Art Happens offers donors a range of rewards in return for their generous support of Mark Fairnington’s exhibition at the Horniman:

  • For a £25 donation, supporters receive a tote bag printed with a distinctive Zebra image
  • In return for £60, donors will receive a pair of framed prints of Mark Fairnington's circular eye paintings – Tyger Tyger and Zebra
  • A £100 donation will secure a beautiful silk scarf printed with the artist's Ms Butterfly image – an imagined plant species featuring striking pink flowers on a black background – as well as a pair of tickets to the exhibition Private View.

Other rewards on offer include personalised postcards, a limited-edition gilded artwork, and even a tour of the artist's studio.
