Romanian eggs on display in Lewisham libraries

For the first time, libraries in Lewisham are welcoming objects from the Horniman Museum and Gardens.

From today, 2 October, 62 Romanian traditionally hand-decorated eggs, which are part of our loans programme Object in Focus, will be on display in three libraries - Deptford, Lewisham and Downham - over the next six months.

Funded by the Arts Council England until 2015, Object in Focus aims to enable museums and community venues to borrow objects from our collections for temporary exhibitions and provide talks, related events and information about the objects.

The eggs begin their tour of the borough at Deptford Lounge on 2 October, continuing to Lewisham library on 3 December and finally Downham library on 4 February 2014.

A range of activities will be happening in the libraries linked to the objects and people are invited to send their thoughts on the eggs on twitter to @hornimanmuseum using the hashtag #eggtales.

Our Object in Focus coordinator, Sarah Mahood, says: "We are delighted to be loaning these beautiful eggs to Lewisham Libraries as part of our Object in Focus initiative and to further establish relationships between museums and libraries by giving access to the Horniman’s objects. We hope that library users enjoy seeing and learning about the eggs and would love to hear their thoughts about them."
