Volunteering is vital to the Horniman Museum and Gardens

Along with a supportive learning environment, we offer the chance to take part in important pieces of work at the Museum, while gaining and insight into the management of a large collection and busy public programme.

Due to high demand for volunteering we can only accept applications for roles listed on this page.

Aquarium Volunteers

The busy Horniman Aquarium has 15 exhibits focusing on different geographical aquatic habitats containing species of flora and fauna correct to the location. Our aim is to inspire and amaze our visitors while providing education on every level, creating and maintaining exhibits to very high standards of practice. The team is looking to involve a number of volunteers who have a keen interest in aquatic life and in this area of the Museum’s work. We are particularly looking for volunteers who are available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and/or Fridays.

Please see the role description below for details:

To apply, please complete the application form below and return to volunteering@horniman.ac.uk by 4pm on Thursday 8 March 2018.

Musical Instrument Documentation Volunteers

The Horniman has an internationally renowned collection of musical instruments. The Music Department acquired three historic keyboard instruments in 2016 from the Finchcocks collection. This acquisition allows us to broaden our collection and widen participation and engagement with visitors.

We are looking for one or two enthusiastic and organised individuals to help us make this part of the collection more accessible, assisting the specialist musical instrument restorers and the musical instrument curators in the research and documentation of two of these instruments. Skills and experience will be gained in the curation, care and documentation of early keyboard musical instruments.

Please see the role description below for details:

To apply, please send your cv with a covering letter to to volunteering@horniman.ac.uk by 4pm on Thursday 22nd March 2018.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an informal interview.
