Getting Here

  • The Horniman is easily accessible by public transport.  Please see here for additional information.
  • If you are bringing a minibus, you can drive onsite to drop off students, but please note that there is no guaranteed minibus parking available onsite.  There is limited accessible parking available onsite that is allocated on a first come, first served basis.  All other vehicles must park offsite.
  • Please note, for vehicles coming onsite, access is through the Horniman Drive gates only.

Facilities: Lunch, Cloakroom, Toilets and Café

  • The Museum is wheelchair friendly with accessible toilets and a lift.  Some parts of the Gardens, including Animal Walk, can be steep and difficult to negotiate for wheelchair users. Find full access details here.
  • There is a café where you can purchase food and drinks, please note that it cannot accommodate classes and that only food purchased there can be eaten in the café.
  • School groups with taught sessions have an allocated lunch time and room with storage space for lunch boxes and coats.
  • There is a small public cloakroom, space is limited and allocated on a first come first served basis.
  • Please do not eat in the Museum; crumbs encourage insects which in turn eat our collections! The Gardens are available for picnicking. Our outdoor picnic tables are available every day during Garden opening hours and the Dutch Barn is open 11am-3pm on Wednesdays to Sundays. These are located in the Bandstand Terrace area. All areas are available on a first come, first serve basis.

What to see and do

  • The museum has a number of galleries and 16 acres of gardens which you can visit free of charge.
  • Multi-sensory opportunities in the galleries include: taxidermy animals which you can touch, and live specimens (bee hive and harvest mice), which you can observe in the Nature Base, sound tables in the Music Gallery and an outdoor space with musical instruments to explore, as well as display gardens.
