Rectangular sampler, worked in silk on linen, with an inscription which begins: 'She that hath virtue for her guide; though wanting beauty is the fairest bride' and ends with the name of the maker ' Ann Tawney 1718.' The text is confined within bands formed by a line of single cross stitches. There is a group of motifs at the bottom which includes two types of plant, two figures dressed in brown, two brown lions and two swans.
