In the early years of the 20th century a wide range of clarinet designs were being produced in London. Different tuning conventions in bands and orchestras meant that clarinets were produced in different sizes for each. Improved key designs had been introduced but had yet to be universally accepted. Also, synthetic materials were often used in place of wood, but both were common. The innovation in the production of this clarinet is the use of the rubber-based compound ebonite.
