Barba Giorgio

Shadow puppet of Barba Giorgio. The head, torso, and arms are made from one piece of perspex; it is hinged to the skirts, which aremade from two pieces of hide, though rigid. The legs are hinged to the bottom of this. Manipulation is by a stickor rod inserted in the hole in the posterior arm. It is decorated with polychrome pigments.

Barba Giorgio is Uncle George, a Vlach shepherd in the Greek shadow theatre. The lower half was made in the 1920s, and the upper half in the 1960s.
