Rectangular stencil for textile dyeing made from brown paper stained and sized with persimmon juice. The cut-out design consists of small and large cherry blossom motifs some of which overlap. The smaller ones are more open, whereas the larger ones have more feathery outlines. Some of the large ones are cut to create the repeat for an overall printed pattern, and the sections appear at the longer sides. A cut section appears on one of the shorter sides which does not have a link to the pattern repeat. On the reverse is what appears to be the outline of a rectangular seal print but this is impossible to read.
stencil (textileworking: dyeing & printing); textile tool
