Bowl decorated with gilded lacquer (shwei-zawa), with chu-pan foliage in gilt on a black ground on the outside. The inside of the bowl has been left black apart from a figure of a lion, one of the 'Eight Planets' motifs, at the base. The lion is associated with the south-east, Tuesday and the planet Mars. There is damage to the rim in three places.
