blanket (clothing: outerwear); textile; pua kumbu

Long rectangular tabby woven cotton blanket ('pua kumbu') sewn together along the selvedges of 2 narrower pieces. The textile is decorated with a wide centre ikat stripe in cream and pink framed by 2 sets of smaller ikat and solidly coloured green, cream and pink stripes. The centre stripe is decorated with crocodile or lizard motifs. The narrow ikat stripes are patterned with short linked motifs. At both shorter sides the edge is marked by a band of black and white stripes created by groups of weft threads. The ends of the warp form a short fringe.
