bookmark

Bookmark constructed from two strips of woven silk textile, with a rectangular piece of paper forming the core. The yellow back is folded over the edges of the blue front, and affixed with black dentate embroidery. The front is embroidered with two lines of Chinese characters at the centre, reading 'God is always by my side'. The character used here translated as God means Jesus Christ, and does not refer to the Emperor. This is therefore an example of Christian embroidery, possibly undertaken at a Mission. Above the script is an embroidered bird and below it a striped cat. The ends of the silk are unwoven at both ends.
