Uilleann pipe. This type of bagpipe has wrist-operated keys on the drones called regulators which the player can use to play different chords. The bellows of this bagpipe are by Coyne. Instrument photographed and measured by N. Hullot on 12-4-2007. Comments from visit: Set appears to have been made for a left handed player. Has then been modified again for right handed player (original tone hole has been blocked and new hole made on chanter). uppermost key on chanter is typical of Coyne's work. Instrument possibly modified by Coyne? Three reeds survive inside instrument (two double, one single). Some of the pins on the chanter may be replacements. Stock and pipes probably made of pearwood.
The uilleann pipe is bellows-blown. The pipes are played seated, as the chanter is frequently stopped against a leather 'popping' pad, tied above the player's right knee. The two conical pipes with keys and ivory stoppers are called regulators, and provide a chordal accompaniment to the melody of the chanter.
