Dirk (tanto) and scabbard (steel, wood). Dirk of heavy dagger with a blade in reasonable condition though the tip is missing: two small nicks near the point and slight rust, no other marks; copper habaki, iron ring guard with a fly in relief; sharkskin (actually ray skin) covered hilt bound with black thread around two menuki. The sheath is of lacquered wood (pattern produced in the lacquer by incision and over-lacquering) and sharkskin, with a brown flat cord looped through the holder and a metal chape. The hilt of the small knife which belongs alongside is missing, though the blade is still in the slot. May not be the original as it seems to be the wrong size.
