backstrap loom

A backstrap loom with a partially woven bast cloth attached to it. The breast beam is circular with a deep incision along one side. The warp is tied to two narrow sticks which are lashed to the breast beam with cane (?). There are three heading sticks. The tabby woven cloth narrows markedly towards the top (warp beam). The weft picks are left uncut on either side after each pick. At the other end are five further sticks, including the lease stick, two pieces of cane lashed together, which secure the warp ends, and a stick with an incision at the narrower end into which the weft may be caught. (As the weft is not continuous there is no need to use a shuttle to make this fabric.) The warp ends are knotted and dyed with shades of brown pigment. [Textile]
