horse blanket; seat mat

Rectangular, multicoloured felt horse blanket or seat mat decorated with a central panel surrounded by a border. The reciprocal curvilinear patterns and ground on panel and border are created in cut sections of felt in orange, red, yellow and blue-black. These are stitched onto the mottled brown backing with tacking stitch which follows the outlines of each shape. The joins are hidden by contrasting-coloured applied braids. The outside edge is covered with an orange and red braid.

Collected in the Lake Karakol area. Made and used by a nomadic group.
