ritual accessory; textile; anteng

Long, narrow, ritual breast cloth decorated with double ikat in brown, red, and black on a dark cream ground (gringsing wayang). The decoration consists of a centre panel bordered in cream along the selvedges. On the shorter sides the panel is bordered by a wide floral border, two narrow borders with floral motifs, and bands in cream, red, and black. The panel contains two repeats of scenes of two anthropomorphic figures facing one another, one kneeling before the ther, which is seated. These scenes each contained within a semicircular frame. They are woven to be viewed horizontally, as the textile is wrapped around the body. The warp has been cut, and loosely twisted to create fringing at both ends.
