Clarinet in C. Beech with african blackwood (grenadilla) or ebony mouthpiece, brass keys and ivory ferrules. Six keys, block mounted with square flat flaps and leather pads. Five pieces. String lapped tenons. Mouthpiece retains a reed, which is tied in position. A banner-shaped emblem is stamped onto the barrel, upper joint, lower joint and bell. These appear to have originally contained the inscription: G.C. PAYNE/LONDON; but none remains fully legible.
