blanket

Blanket made from two panels which may once have formed a skirt or skirts. Sewn together along what would have been the waistband. The part which would have formed the upper part of the skirt and now forms the inner part of the blanket is of cotton fabric patterned with batik technique in geometric designs of white against an indigo ground. On top of this section narrow strips of red cloth have been applied in rectangles, some with additional small squares of fabric applied on top in red, blue or white. Below this section has been sewn a much more loosely woven strip of hemp cloth, much of it densely embroidered in yellow red and white cross stitch. Some rectangular panels of floral factory produced fabric have been applied in this section, with a few applied squares of black or white fabric on top. 87 x 33cm. Hmong. Northern Thailand (AF2)
