beater (food processing & storage)

Rice beater, penatapan padi. More or less circular wooden beater, ornately carved on one side with a four-petalled stylised flower motif, with integral handle all carved from one piece of wood. Slightly pointed at side opposite handle. Traces of red paint all over. A small hole towards the end of the handle through which a cord would originally have passed for suspension.

for beating the stalks of a sheaf of newly harvested traditional Balinese rice to make the ends even.
