manuscript

One of three handwritten gilt manuscript pages from Shalu Monastery, Tibet. The page is written in Tibetan script in gold ink on a blue background, the rest of the parchment has been stained blue. This is the title page, it has a single line of text, with the rest of the page being taken up with foliate decoration and Buddhist symbols. The left panel on this page is annotated with four characters written at right angles to the rest of the text.

This folio is one of three (the other two being 2014.160 and 2014.161). However the three folios are separate and not sequential. They could be from the same volume but most likely from different sections of mantras. The mantra is written in gold ink on black / dark blue paper or 'Mthing-shog' in Tibetan. Typically important mantra are written in gold ink on Mthing-shog paper. The mantra on the folio roughly translates as follows: May it be auspicious! By the power of such auspiciousness, may everyone be blessed with peace and happiness, here and now.
