protective charm

A mounted wooden Daoist charm disc, bagua or Eight trigrams. On the front in the centre is a Chinese character 'shan' meaning kindness, written in black ink on red, covered with glass in the centre, encircled by the eight trigrams carved in low relief. Both the inner ring and outer rim are painted in red. The eight trigrams are painted in black against a green background. An iron loop is attached to the top of the back for hanging.

Hung above the door or on the ridgepole inside the dwelling as a charm to ward off evil spirits.
