321.321-71 Necked bowl lutes sounded by bowing with a bow

Gusle, spike fiddle, with bow. Carved from one piece of wood, the back is rebec-shaped and has a rectangular slot cut into it. Long neck ending with a D-shaped finial carved into the form of a horse's head. The single peg, consisting of a roughly shaped forked twig, passes from back to front of the neck without forming a peg box. The string consists of a number of strands of horsehair, which are attached by cords to a knob on the end of the instrument. The finial and front of the neck are decorated with incised designs coloured with ink. The body is covered with parchment which is tied with thongs at the neck and knob, and attached by pegs around the instrument. A number of holes are punched into the membrane. Bridge missing. Bow: sickle-shaped, made from a forked twig, the hairs are tied through holes in the stick. Still tacky with the remains of rosin.
