figure (ritual & belief: representations)

Porcelain figure, Daikoku, god of wealth. He is sitting on the ground, his right knee bent and a horned devil figure in front of him. Daikoku's left hand is on the devil figure's rear, his right hand is raised with a hammer as if he will strike it. Daikoku has white leggings caught in at the ankles by a wide blue band, a brown sleeved tunic on his upper body and below the waist. The tunic has cloud motifs on it; the leggings reverse S shaped motifs. His shoes are not a Japanese style and may represent the Japanese idea of Chinese shoes. He has a brown cloth cap and large ears. The devil has a blue skirt cloth and a yellow cloth round the neck. Seal on underside same as that on no.39. Probably Satsuma export ware.
