armlet (adornment)

The ownership of this object was transferred to Nigeria’s National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) in November 2022.

An armcuff (ikoro) made of copper alloy. Benin City. It is punched and decorated and is in the shape of a long tube. It is decorated with designs in repoussé work - alternating panels of human figures with panels of overlapping zigzag patterns, on a dotted background. Cuffs are worn by the Ọba and chiefs during ceremonies when dressed in their full regalia. Made by Igun Eronmwon guildmembers (bronze and brass casters).
