lota (water container (food service))

Engraved brass water container, or lota, with a bulbous body and flared mouth. The neck is of brass and is decorated with simple punched geometric devices. The copper-covered central band has engraved decoration of rectangular cartouches in which are set figures of HIndu deities including one of Ganesha against a punched dotted background. Below this is a brass band on whichare engraved motifs of fish and geometrical patterns. Below this a band of narrow stylised lotus petals. Label: one brown label, fragmentary and handwritten.
