Set of two printed schoolboy's lesson books with thread-stitched binding, each in several volumes. The books are accompanied by a loose wooden cover.

Four volumes are of 'Xin Zeng You Xue Gu Shi Qiong Lin', 'Newly Revised Preliminary Study Story Books', from an original copy compiled by Mr Yun-sheng Cheng in the late Ming period. This edition has annotation by Mr Sheng-mai Zhou in the 25th year of Qianlong period, 1760, published by 'Hua Lin Tang', 'Hua Lin Studio'.

Three volumes are of the 'Mencius', one of the Four Books of Ancient Confucian texts, which formed part of the core curriculum for civil service examinations in the Qing Dynasty.
