figure (ritual & belief: representations)

Portable shrine containing a figure of Kwannon, bodhisattva of Mercy, in a gilt lacquer case. Male figure with a high headdress standing on a lotus pedestal, holding a water bottle inthe right hand. Two curved doors on hinges meet in the middle, with two mon on the outside. Above the door are two crests, mon, in engraved brass on a wooden canopy in side the shrine, one an open circle & the other a five-petalled flower, (kikyou or Japanese bell flower). The doors are fastened by a clasp fitting over a brass button, also in the shape of a flower. Part of inscription inside door reads: 'Kaibutsuchiken = open-Buddha-know-see'. Part hard to read and not yet translated. Signature below this also not yet identified.Label on reverse of case has Japanese inscription. 5 ½ x 2.75 x 2.25"
