lekythos; grave good

Miniature lekythos, oil flask. It is Athenian, and made of of red clay. A torus foot supports a rounded body. It is a one-piece vessel, with a short neck leading into a flaring lip. It has a single ribbon handle. The lip is painted black on both the interior and exterior, and the neck is also painted black. The body is covered with dilute brown paint crosshatches, with white paint dots in rows superimposing the hatching. The base is undecorated. There are shallow fillets on the shoulder of the vessel and at the top where the ribbon handle joins the body.

Lekythoi often served as offerings to the dead, placed on tombs or on the steps of grave stelae and used to anoint funerary monuments, especially by female mourners
