Short newspaper article describing the simple yet dignified funeral of John Horniman. His remains were interred in the field adjoining the Friends’ Meeting House, where all the funeral stones are plain and modest. The funeral ritual was equally simple: no service was held at the Meeting House, instead there was a solemn moment of silence at the grave, followed by a member of the community saying a few words, another one reciting a prayer and, lastly, a friend reading aloud the words of a hymn. Some of the mourners did not wear black. Apart from the widow and the two sons, delegates were present from various institutions of which the late John Horniman was a supporter.
