Opening lines: 'I have been asked to talk to you on a subject which could last many hours, in fact, many weeks if you were patient enough to listen and it is difficult to know exactly where to start and where to end. The earliest sounds which would have been recognized by prehistoric man would be the sound of wind through the trees or across the tops of broken reeds or canes.'
