People wear this kind of sock when they wear traditional clothes (kimono) in Japan. These socks (tabi) have two spaces for toes. One for the big toe and one for the rest. They were hand-made this way to fit into the Japanese sandals (geta). Today most "tabi" are machine sewn.
These are childrens tabis.
