belt (general & multipurpose)

Woven pink and green belt.
PLACE: Sierra Madre Mountains, Mexico, Central America

This waist belt is worn tied around the waist over tunics known as huipol. They are made and worn by the Huichol people of the Sierra Madre region of Mexico, who live in the states of Navarit and Jalisco. They call themselves "Wixaritari" which means "the people" in the Huichol language. Their weaving and beadwork is religiously and ritually important to their culture, as their weaving is inspired by their spiritual dreams and contains a variety of symbolism. Weavers are traditionally women.
