Oval paper label: 'Joseph Scates Manufacturer, 10 Frith St, Soho, London.' 7.25" diameter fine rosewood ends, neat simple frets, flat, pine boards. 48 ivory buttons, stamped, black and sky-blue accidentals. Later black leather straps with Wheatstone-style claw clips, small nickel screws. Four-fold green leather bellows, solid gold star papers, silk on lower folds. Square-end nickel reeds, left-hand action has 'J Scates' signature; 'W Graham, Newcastle-upon-Tyne' repairer's label; and owner's name and the date 'Oct. 1853.'
