Sideblown horn, carved from the tusk of an elephant. The triangular mouth hole is carved on the outer curve of the instrument approximately 150mm. from the bell. The bell is carved in relief with geometrical patterns.
This is one of two horns that were donated to the museum in 1966. The donor's grandfather had been given them by Glele, the King of Dahomey (now the Republic of Benin) in the 1870s, and they had originally been used as state trumpets.
