According to Edward Hart, writing on 4 May 1927, 'From bottom left (no 1): adult female, July 1864; (no 2): adult male, August 23rd 1875; (no 3): adult male, November 2nd 1882; winter plumage; (no 4): adult male, September 14th 1881; (no 5): adult male, September 26th 1890; (no 6): adult male, September 14th 1881; (no 7): adult female, August 30th 1890; (no 8): adult female, September 26th 1890; (no 9): adult male, July 26th 1891; (no 10): adult female, September 10th 1891; (no 11): adult male, September 26th 1890; (no 12): adult female, 30th August 1890. Shot by me in Lime Kiln Channel, Christchurch Harbour. Sexes alike. Summer and winter plumage differ. Mounted by me'.
