Adam Carse

Biography

Adam Carse was educated in composition in Hannover and at the Royal Academy of Music, where he later became Fellow and Professor (1922-1940). He was most renowned for his knowledge and research of the history of orchestras and instruments. During his life he amassed a collection of 350 antique wind instruments. The collection was given to the Horniman in 1947 as a memorial to Carse’s son Peter, who was killed during the final days of World War II.

Two of his most well known publications are 'The Orchestra in the 18th Century' and 'The Orchestra from Beethoven to Berlioz' published in 1940 and 1948 respectively.
