North European military sword. The iron hilt is of conventional form, and swords with this pattern of hilt formed the primary infantry sword for very many of Europe’s armies during the second half of the 17th century. Usually however they are fitted with slightly curved single edge blades; this example has an unusually long straight double edge blade cut with three short fullers.
