sample (textileworking: weaving); textile

Long rectangular sample of brocaded textile with multicoloured motifs on an orange silk ground. The piece is seemingly from a larger cloth, as some of the patterns have been cut. The pattern consists of rows alternating between larger foliate motifs and smaller offering basket and fan, or feather and cloud motifs. The larger motifs are separated by coins and three-legged censers, or double gourds. The motifs are woven in cream, blue, green, yellow threads and gold-coloured metal strips.
