manuscript

Manuscript on mulberry paper in a cloth cover. Manuscript consists of many rectangular sheets of mulberry paper stitched together at one edge, which is also stitched into a cloth wrapper, in which it is rolled. The pages are in the Shan language and in Shan script, and are numbered. The cloth in which it is wrapped consists of a black handwoven cloth with supplementary weft patterning in three bands of green, pink and green, with a strip of black market-bought cloth stitched to all four sides. This is hand-stitched to a larger piece of pink, loosely-woven, cloth, hemmed by hand. At one end a piece of paper has been tacked onto the pink fabric, on which is a handwritten inscription reading: 'Book in Burmese language SHAN STATE UPPER BURMA'.
