basket (containers)

Ivory basket in a floral shape with curved sides and everted rim, standing on four legs. It has two curvilinear handles, which rest on top of the rim when not in use. The frame of the basket is constructed of eight segments made from strips of elephant ivory carved with floral designs, the spaces in between filled by thin sheets of ivory. Each sheet has a finely pierced background of vertical strips, against which landscapes with figures are carved in relief. The centre is carved in relief with a roundel of a landscape with figures within a floral border. The legs and handles are decorated with openwork foliate scrolling and flowers.

Made for export to Europe.
