Terracotta figure from North West Frontier of India.
Head with a concave back from a human figurine (female?) in red terracotta with white speckling; pinched beak-like nose, appliqué eyes and a coiffure made from a set of appliqué pellets arranged from ear to ear around the face. This figurine is a common find in early historic period, often Buddhist, sites in the North West and it is probably a votive figure, representing an unknown female deity. Archaeological context: presumably unstratified and from a surface collection Marked on the reverse in black ink with 'SB' (probably Sari Bahlol, Mardan District, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan) and in pencil with the number '79'. Circa 1st or 2nd century BCE. Donated by Col D H Gordon (1952/3).
