fan (costume accessories)

Oblong, lobed embroidered silk fan stretched over a cane frame with a central rib which is slightly bent on the top and secured with a 'ruyi' shaped gilt metal clasp, trimmed with patterned silk ribbon and gold thread. The red silk leaf is embroidered with peony blossom and butterfly. A stiffen white silk rosette with applique peony spray and scrolls design, is attached to the central bottom of the fan leaf, extending to a turned ebony handle fitted with bone finials painted in red. The wooden handle is embellished with incised scrolling stylised lotus flowers, also known as 'precious image' flowers (baoxianghua).
