headdress (clothing: headwear)

Headdress, or 'lahupa'. It consists of a heavy canework helmet at the base, with two semicircles of cane at the front and back. Between these is a band of fur, possibly bear fur, running from side to side over the top of the helmet. Ten black and white hornbill feathers are attached to the semicircular cane superstructure. At the front in the centre is a brass disc with a central boss, flanked by two circular plates. These plates are made of cane filled with red seeds, surrounded by a row of white cowrie shells and edged with tufts of stiff black animal hair.
