medallions

Collection of forty-nine plaster medallions arranged within a case. There is space towards the lower right corner for a missing medallion. The medallions vary in size but each one is encased within a yellow surround. On the surface of each medal is a scene representing a character or story from Roman history. There are additional medals representing figures from Greek and Persian history, while the medals in the lower section of the case show scenes from classical mythology. The case, which is hinged at the front, resembles a book and has been bound in red leather. On the spine, the words 'Dolce Gemme Antiche Tav. IV' have been worked in gold. On the inside of the cover is a printed index which lists, in Italian, the name or scene depicted on each medal along with a corresponding number.
