scarf; sample (textileworking: dyeing & printing); textile

Rectangular length of cream cotton decorated with hand-drawn double sided batik in brown (soga) and blue (indigo). The textile is hemmed on 3 sides, and might have been intended as a kemben or a table runner. The decoration consists of a centre panel framed by 2 borders. The panel is decorated with a larger motif repeated 7 1/2 times alternating in orientation. These are interspersed with bird motifs, some of which might be part of the larger motifs. The others appear to represent phoenixes. The background is covered with short, irregular, curved lines. The panel is framed by 2 borders which appear to represent a knotted, tasselled fringe. In each of the 4 corners is a small floral motif on the same ground as the centre panel.
