figure (ritual & belief: representations); votive offering

Terracotta animal figurine, a votive offering. It is from the Archaic period in Cyprus. It is made of a pinky white gritty clay with creamy white slip. The figurine is of a small animal with a lemon-shaped body, possibly representing a donkey, pig or goat. The body is decorated with dark brown spots on the shoulders and stripes over the body. The head detail is fine, with large ears and eye blobs added, and the nose and mouth are formed by two horizontal impressions. One of the ears is painted dark brown and the eyes are outlined in brown, with a brown dot also painted in the centre. A hole is pierced in the centre of the figurine's back. There is a sketch of the figurine on the review card.
